What a great dog – the Airedale Terrier, historically called the’King of Terriers’, is a medium-sized dog that weighs forty five to 65 pounds and reaches lengths of 24 inches. They’re the biggest of the terrier breeds, but are as alert and energetic as their smaller relatives.

Airedale Terriers usually have tan heads, ears, chests, undersides, and legs. Their sides and saddles are black. Some Airedale Terriers have a bit of red mixed in with their white or black chest markings. Thanks to the consistency of their coats, Airedale Terriers will need consistent grooming.

This type of dog is extremely active, and should be exercised and played with on a day-to-day basis. All the same it is preferable if the terrier is going to live with a family with older and well-behaved children. A family with smaller pets, for example pussies or mice, should doubtless avoid getting an Airedale Terrier, since terriers are susceptible to chase small animals and the like. They can live alongside other dogs, as long as they are trained from puppyhood. Coaching itself isn’t a problem. These terriers are playful and raring to learn, as well as constant and protective of their family.

The dog first appeared in Britain, sometime in the 18th century. It was crossbred from a Waterside Terrier and an Otterhound. They were originally used to hunt little game, and then progressed to big-game hunting and police work. Though the breed has been mostly’retired’ from such heavy work, they retain their stamina and tenacity, and remain good trackers and hunters.

Homes that like to exercise and go outdoors are perfect for the Airedale Terrier. It can live with other pets, or be fine living alone. With its seemingly boundless energy, it’s only an issue of finding a family that can keep up with this fantastic pet.
