MG asked:

This question does not truly fit in Green Living, but I determined that my chances of receiving an answer would be greatest in this category…

I am looking to sell old tinted glass windows from a sun room which I recently remodeled. They are very large, double-paned windows. Do you know of any place in the Houston, Texas area that recycles glass of this nature? Or even in the vicinity?

There are two options: Reuse or recycle.
Most cities have one or several businesses that sell what is called demolition materials, these are the reuse options.

Vendors of new windows are the most likely connected to recycling facilities for clear glass.

There are craft shops that work with broken colored glass.

Are you trying to sell the glass or recycle it? If you want to sell it put an add in the local paper and people building their own homes (or remodeling) may want them. If you wish to recycle them listed them on FREE CYCLE or Craig’s list. It would help to list the quantity, size, and material of the windows.

I agree with Ray T, post them on Freecycle. Or you can donate them to Habitat for Humanity’s Restore.

Call your local Real Estate Agents.. They may know where a place is to Sell it.. ( I DO IN TORONTO..However, that would help you

They may be worth a lot of money if they are antique and some love to use old style Windows / Doors in Remodelling

Go to the Local Home Depot and Ask. Phone Builders , they may halep you.

THE MAGIC WORD IS OLD ( HOW OLD ARE THEY.. HOPE THIS HINTS HELP YOU .. Zena

Check for local Public Greenhouses that have plants for display. Most likely it’ll be an educational institution. (Tinted glass is excellent for plants, etc., that need lots of light, but not glaring light.) They may be interested to get the panels for replacement or expansion.

I’d take them if I were near you as I have started my own greenhouse. I get some veggies all year; lots of flowering plants, also. So, I also agree that Freecycle in your area is a good bet, but make sure you get the idea about a personal greenhouse in the offer.

Many glass recyclers don’t want window glass. It would be better to reuse them. They sound perfect for the greenhouse I want to build next month but Houston is too far away to work for me. Put an ad in the classifieds. Someone will have a use for them.

WOW!! I sure wish you lived nearer to me!! Having to deal in trying to restore a vintage home after the hurricanes of 2004 I would advise you to let your fingers do the walking both in the yellow pages, and typing on the computer. First off, begin with your local materials salvage companies that handle ITEMS FALLING INTO THE EXACT SAME CATEGORY THAT YOURS DOES… i.e. items used in restoring older homes with PERIOD MATERIALS!!

There’s a HUGE MARKET for these items!! I could help you a lot more personally if you were in the New Orleans, or Oklahoma City areas because I’ve a brother in OKC, and I lived in New Orleans myself for umpteen years and have all the contacts you’d need there, or if you lived nearer to me now. As it is, we live almost exactly straight across the Gulf of Mexico from one another…lol!

I don’t know if I could help more thru the good ole reliable Southern grapevine, or not… ;~).

I WOULD ABSOLUTELY NOT… AND I REPEAT NOT!!! JUST RECYCLE THEM FOR THE GLASS alone without exhausting this other avenue first!!! With the type of glass they are you have a much better chance selling them thru that market for a MUCH BETTER PRICE!! SALVAGER’S!! RESTORERS!! RENOVATORS!!

Don’t let anyone scare you off by saying they have “lead in them”! So do all of the MOST BEAUTIFUL OLD WINDOWS IN THE WORLD!! I, and every child my age, and many born for years after me, were raised with lead everywhere and we’re a heck of a lot STRONGER, & HEALTHIER than this bunch of weaklings that inhabit this Country this generation!!

I can remember all of us sitting chewing on the window sills looking out on beautiful days, & no matter how much we were warned, gnawing on the window sills! We always chewed on the pencil leads, Always ate the white paste!! We’re all still alive and perfectly healthy… MAYBE IT MADE US ALL A LOT SANER & HEALTHIER THAN THIS BUNCH OF YOUNGER DOPES WE RUN INTO ON HERE THAT CAN’T EVEN FIND THEIR NOSES TO PICK!!…LOL!!

They can’t even choose a Presidential Candidate without strangers brainwashing them into which one to vote for… God forbid they research and choose the best one from the person’s OWN PERSONAL RECORD…. Too bad they didn’t eat lead or white paste…

You could always call some interior designer, or people who do nothing but restore your areas very historic homes for ideas & suggestions. Good Luck & I’m always near for any questions or help, too!!
