poll p asked:

When I open the door to let my cat in after he’s been meowing for about 5 minutes, he just stands there. Finally when he comes back in, he will want back out 5 minutes later. Does anyone else’s cat do this and why do you think they do?

p.s. my cat is not an outside cat. We have a sunroom where he can look outside.

Cats are always doing this. Mine will go out through the catflap, but if he comes back and he knows you are in, he will sit and tap on the catflap waiting for you to open the door!

When my cat did this, it was because he was trying to get my attention. One time it was to show me a snake. Another time, to alert me to a deer in the yard. Sometimes, he just wanted me to be outside with him. As soon as I would go back inside, he would follow me in.
He still likes to be in whatever room I’m in.

He just wants attention and to see if you’re going to pay it or not! That’s just the way they are. Every cat I’ve had does the same thing. Actually I’ve noticed they don’t do it when they’re young – only when they’re about 2 years old and older. Must be because they’re getting older they want to make sure you’re still giving them the attention. You could just ignore him when he THINKS he wants back outside. Especially since he IS an inside cat.

    Most cats are like that…
    Mine are…
I think they do it just to be getting your attention and being social…

Your cat is not fickle, he just doesn’t like closed doors. He thinks that you are hiding something from him in there. Try putting a pet door in so he can come and go into that room as he pleases. It will save you the aggrivation and keep him from worrying that you are hiding something!!! :)
